If you can believe it dust mites survive and feed on dead human skin flakes. Even though there is no complete solution to eliminate them you can try to inhibit their growth.
It is a known fact that dust mites are in our homes and number in millions, but are not visible to our eye. They can be found in any unprepared home which can lead to year-round allergies. These mites can be found in your pillows, mattresses, carpets, furniture, clothing and almost anywhere.
A dust mite vacuum is a fancy way of saying HEPA filter vacuum. These have been designed specifically to help control dust mites and using a closed system to help contain allergens during vacuuming. If you have a cheap vacuum you can actually release the dust allergen back into the air –while you’re vacuuming.
There are several features that you should look for in a good dust mite vacuum. Sometimes there will be a pre-filter which helps prevent clogging of dirt and dust in the main filter. The special HEPA filters ensure that the air emitted during vacuuming is free from allergens. Bag, canister, and motor components are completely sealed with the help of rubber gaskets which reduce chances of leakage of dust filled air back into your room.
Take a look at the Allersearch ADS Allergy Spray product. This is something you spray on your carpent before vacuuming to specifically treat the dust mites.
Additionally you could look at one of those portable air purifiers. They also come with HEPA filters and carbon filters which will treat the air in your room. Every few weeks you just throw out the carbon pre filter and stick in a new one.
I have a MIELE which I love. It is a bit pricey but you can get them on ebay. I have the red velvet one. WE actually have 2. The first one still works and it is 20 years old. The second is about 3 years old. They have filters and a charcoal filter exhaust. I’d get another for my next one too.
Don’t forget to wash your sheets, pillow case cover, mattress pad at least once a week in hot water. Vacuum your mattress at least once a month. Dust mites as you know are microscopic, that is why you need a vacuum with a HEPA filtration system, HEPA filtration was developed by NASA scientists a few years ago. This filtration system will keep the Dust Mites, their feces, and their dead carcasses from becoming airborne as they pass through a lesser vacuum’s exhaust. If you have a forced air furnace in your home, check out the Filtrete furnace filters by 3M, they are paper pleated. They also make one specially for Allergy sufferers. The air ducts should be professionally cleaned at least every 5 years to remove the debris collecting in them. If you have pets in the home, they have to go. The proteins found in their saliva and on their dander are a major source of severe discomfort in the asthma sufferer.
