For larger items (such as a mattress that you cannot obviously put in your freezer) you can spray it with Febreze allergen reducer, let it set for at least 10 mins. and then using either a vacuum, with a new bag, or a hand held "dustbuster" like item, go over the upholstery of your couch, chair or mattress. Also dust and have low humidity in your house plus vacuum at least once a week.
