I have 2 grandparents, parents and an older brother. I have dust mite allergies. We have hard wood flooring in a medium one storied house with no big open walking space. Outside does have walking space but a lot of roses and plants. We are both (brothers) in our teens. We also have a 30 gallon fish tank if thats important.
In my preference I like tough and faithful dogs that can be calm and energetic.

These dogs are spunky, energetic, AWESOME family dogs who will readily go hiking, running in the park, or even jogging with you! They are small enough to get along with everybody, are good "guy dogs", except for maybe the poodles, and are just friendly and smart and easy to train.

3STEP 1: CHOOSING THE RIGHT DOG
Remember, some dog breeds are good for you, but not others. Some dog breeds are good for others, but not you. It all depends on your lifestyle and family. If people suggest dog breeds for you, don’t listen to what they say because they don’t know very much about you. All dogs are different and have many different types of needs (amount of exercise, food they need, energy level, size, etc.) that you may or may not be able to give to them! So here is a lot of info on getting a good dog for YOU and helpful tips and websites for dog owners!!!
Also, before getting a dog, you need to consider the following….
-Are you and everyone in your family healthy enough to handle a dog?
-Do you have the money to buy the dog food, toys, and medicine from the vet? It costs at least $800-$1,000 the first year of owning a dog!!!!!!!!
-Are you willing to give your dog daily exercise?
-Are you willing to train your dog?
If the answer is “no” to even ONE of these answers, you are NOT ready for a dog.
Here is a great dog quiz that is ran by Animal Planet that determines dog breeds that will fit well into your lifestyle!
http://animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogselector.do
Also, try this quiz! I think this one may be a little bit more accurate than the other. Maybe try using the results from this one instead…..
http://dogtime.com/matchup/start
After the quiz, do some homework on the dog breeds that the quiz suggested! Choose the one you think most fits your family! Check out….

STEP 2: WHERE TO GET A DOG?
ADOPT! Shelter dogs are CHEAP ($50-$200) and are just as good as any other dog from a breeder! They are in need of a loving home! Are you willing to give a dog a second chance that may not even be alive the next day because no one adopted them? There are millions of dogs that die each year that have no clue what they have done wrong. They die wondering, “What terrible thing did I do to my master I loved so much to make them leave me all alone to die here in a cage?”
Here is a great site that lists shelter dogs in your area! (first type in your zip code)
http://petfinder.com
Until there are none, rescue one.
This is what happens to shelter pets when no one was kind enough to save them. They will never get another chance and never got a good life. http://www.flyingfur.com/i/discarded.jpg
Save one before that happens.
There are just not enough people aware of these types of things.
If for some reason you can not or do not want to adopt, please get a PUREBRED (NO TEACUPS OR DESGNERS) from a good, reputable breeder!
STEP 3: PREPARING TO GET A DOG
Also, if you are not an experienced dog trainer, here are VERY helpful websites that will help you train your dog properly!
http://www.dog-obedience-training-review.com/
http://leerburg.com/
Also, enrolling your dog in obedience classes will help tremendously. It is a learning experience for both you AND the dog!!! Watching “It’s Me or the Dog” on Animal Planet really helps with dog training and so does “The Dog Whisperer” on Discovery (I think it is on discovery).
Supplies:
-Water and Food Bowls
-Leashes
-Collar
-Dog Food
-Local Vet CHOSEN!
-Dog Bed
-Toys
-Treats
-Dog crate (optional)
- Brush

PUPPY: http://www.raisingspot.com/intro_bringing_puppy_home.php
ADULT DOG: http://www.paw-rescue.org/dog_guide.php
STEP 5: RAISING A GOOD DOG!
You need to give your dog a lot of things, but one of the most important things is going to the vet!
http://www.1800petmeds.com/ -(1-800-PETMEDS) go to this site (or call) where you can buy the same medicine your vet suggested, but for a cheaper price! WARNING: ONLY buy medicine your vet suggests from this site!!! Good luck! I hope I helped and have a wonderful time with your dog!
The key thing in raising a dog that will respect you is good, stern training that starts when the dog is a pup! Respect the dog, and the dog will respect you! You may give your dog food and love, and he very well may like you, but he very well may not respect you! You have to earn it! Dogs need a lot of attention, love, and training. Do all of these things, and they will be your loyal friend forever.

4You want a small dog, tho not a toy. One which you can keep clipped. One that is obedient and easy to train. I recommend a Miniature Poodle. They are very intelligent, easy to groom, easy to train, and generally low maintenance. They are full of personality and crave human devotion.

5Don’t get a Husky.
Do consider a Greyhound, Golden Retriever, and if you can exercise and train a hyper dog, Labrador.

6Probably no large dog breeds, collies, rotties, german shepherds or labs. A smaller dog would be good, if you have allergies one without long hair or sheds a lot. mini pincher’s, pugs, bulldogs, beagles etc. They are perfect for small houses don’t require a lot of maintenance and are good lap dogs.however rose bushes are toxic to dogs so i would watch them whenever they go out side to play.

7Your family would do well with an older small or medium sized dog. A dog that is older than 3 or 4 is calm but still has energy. A puppy is going to require alot of attention, potty training, obedience training and as teens, you are probably not home alot as you are with friends and part time jobs etc. You all should go to your local pound or check on petfinder to see if your whole family can find a dog that fits. The whole family should be in on this decision as the dog will have to be welcome by all and liked by all.

8Yorkshire Terrier
Miniature Pinscher
Longhaired or Smooth Coat Chihuahua
Maltese
Considering the elderly people you have in your house i would consider some small dog breeds.
And since you have plants in your backyard i would recommend a little play pen in the backyard free of plants where your dog can do its business and since you have such small space in your house i would recommend you taking your dog out for a walk every day one in the morning or afternoon and then one in the evening.
but remember to research these breeds before getting one, for that is what a responsible dog owner does.
