When the sun is shining through my windows I notice a lot of floating things that look like dust all through my air. I have noticed some allergies lately. Are they dust mites? How do I get rid of all of them. An air filter?

1I think the air filter idea works, and also the pulling-up-the-carpets and keeping your tile clean would also do a lot of good.
But, one easy fix is to open your windows for 10 minutes every day — preferrably in the morning when the sun is shining.
Another thing: make sure you air and beat the heck out of your blankets, comforters, pillows, couch pillows, throw rugs, etc. Do this at least twice a year, but once a month might be better if you are allergic. (Do it outside, of course.) Keep things vacuumed and dusted.
If this doesn’t help, then you may need to do some major work — filters on the windows, pull up the carpet, get rid of excess clutter, books and bedding (including throw pillows) and get a couch/chairs that are easy to wipe clean and don’t hold dust.
Good luck.

2Air filter no good, they are all hype, your coffee table is just as effective in picking up dust.
Do you have carpet?
You can vacuum and steam clean all day, but fine, particulate dust will filter underneath the carpet.
When you walk around, you’ll kick this dust in the air and breathe it.
I pulled all my carpet out and put down tile and it did a world of good for my allergies. You wouldn’t believe the fine dust that was underneath,
it was horrible.

3The best solution is to purchase an air purifier with a filter, preferably a HEPA filter, but they can be a little expensive. Keep it runinng full time for a few days until you recycle all the air.
If that’s not an option, you might try a humidifier. The humidifier will make the dust particles heavy with water and they will tend to settle. Dust storms are more a problem of DRY air. Then you can clean your floors and surfaces and wash all fabrics and that should reduce your dust situation. If you don’t have a humidifier, there may be some home grown methods for humidification. Lay some really wet towels around the room, or leave a crockpot on with the lid off, or just go around the room spraying a water bottle generously. Caution, once you get your dust situation under control, don’t run the humidifier too much, because excessive humidity causes an explosion in your dust mite population. It is helpful, though, when you have a bad cold.
