I went to an allergist and it was determined that I have a few severe allergies, one of which is to dust mites.
My husband does not realize how much it affects me. He has called me a dictator when I have a special request that he and my 3 other kids take their shoes off at the door. This is a major cause of concern for me-I know about what kinds of things can be brought in on your shoes. Most importantly, I think it is important to be vigilant about keeping clean (I am allergic to trees….lucky me
).
Off the subject: my husband also never washes his hands after going to the bathroom. My kids have brought this up to me and I am eeked out by it. He is a schoolteacher, and yes, the school teaches proper handwashing to the1st graders, I believe. Apparently, he is exempt from these rules!!!!
Anyone out there have these allergies and they are driving you insane, along with this kind of behavior from those around you? It is as though my allergies do not exist (they did a RAST testing, so it’s very accurate)!!
How do I educate, without lecturing, my husband on how to help?
He just laid a comforter that has been laying on the couch, which has previously been shared with dogs, on our king size bed. I had just gotten done putting new sheets and pillowcases on it!

1I had a very strong skin reaction to dust mites and grass so I know where you’re coming from. I tried to mow the lawn once but ended up with bad asthma and hayfever, and I know about it when I stir up dust in the house.
You can get dust mite proof covers that cover all your bedding – duvet covers and pillow covers. I think if you wash other bedding in 60′C water or hotter the dust mites all die. You should also get a vacuum cleaner with HEPA filters so you don’t blow all the dust mites around the room when you vacuum.
I have had a positive-pressure ventilation system installed in my home, and this made a huge difference to my allergies. It’s good to keep circulating fresh air through the house, but not if it’s coming unfiltered from outside. My system filters the ceiling air and brings it into the house. Outside air can’t come in as the pressure is higher inside the house. It also avoids damp air.
I don’t know about your husband. Have you shown him the results. Try googling "dust mite allergy" too. Perhaps if he sees other people have it he will see that it is a recognised condition.
Try also joining up to an allergy support group. We have one here and they send out a magazine every couple of months that is full of helpful hints, allergy-free recipes, etc.

2you Must vacuum as often as you can. Rid your home of carpet and/or have bare floor wherever you can.
