I change my linen once a week but I still have dust mites. How can I get rid of them? Can they be eliminated permanently? How do they get in the mattress?
No chemicals but, Start with your bed and pillows. First, start by dusting them until you’re satisfied. Then, proceed to vacuum the mattress and pillows. Your vacuum cleaner should have a HEPA filter. Otherwise, you will be just spreading dust mites further.
If you haven’t cleaned your bed or washed your pillows for a long time now, then you may want to consider washing everything. You may want to leave your mattress outside under direct sunlight for several hours. Direct sunlight is deadly to these pests. You may want to wash your pillows with hot water to kill every dust mite in them, since they cannot endure high temperatures.
Dust mites are everywhere and there is nothing you can do about it. They are so minute you can not see them. If you can’t get rid of something, they are not dust mites. You may have something else in your bed.
There’s not too much you can do with the mattress short of fumigation. I can list off some chemicals that would kill the mites, but they’re pretty toxic to humans too (and I wouldn’t want to sleep in a bed exposed to these chemicals).
When you wash your sheets use bleach, and that should take care of the problem.
Wash your sheets in the hotest water you have. Buy those covers for pillows and mattresses and put them on. Get rid of all carpet. Do not line dry anything.
Dust Mites are so small you can’t see them….are you sure they are dust mites? Vacuuming will help, steaming will help and keeping your linens clean (hot water wash). If it is an old mattress – replace it. Be sure it’s not bed bugs or fleas…..you may want to clean your carpet (floors) as well.
I’ve had the same problem. I had bed bugs.
Well …I read that they can’t fly or jump.
So what I did was ring the bed legs with an insecticide poison.
I’ve read that they roam around all the rooms in the house, and go to anything that’s warm. (me)
So anyway …that’s how I got rid of them.
But …at the same time …I could find no bed bugs anywhere, but I was getting ‘itchy’! – And I think that is what you have described as ‘dust mites’.
Ringing the bed legs works. – But, don’t let any linen or bedding drop or hang to the floor, or the mites will crawl back onto your bed.
Make an ‘island’ out of your bed, …so they can’t git ya.
I would look into a Norwex product called "Mattress cleaner"… you use it two or three times a year, and it is an active enzyme that eats dust mites and its feces.
