Dust mites cause problems by causing allergic reactions, not so much by carrying infective viruses/bacteria. They are a huge source of problem for asthmatics and ezcema sufferers, as their excrement are a very common allergen for these people (dust mites live in carpets, pillows, bedding, and the like).
Are they dangerous? Well, depends on who you are I suppose – asthma is generally a manageable disease, but the odd person still dies from asthma, even a country like the USA.
