Posted by admin as Bed Bug Protection
about a month ago i moved into a nice apartment only to find out my daughter was getting terrible bites on her skin. i found out the people here had bed bugs. i have so many clothes and am going to move this weekend. can i just put the clothes that are clean in the dryer for thirty minutes or everything has to be washed…that seems expensive?? also what about my plant in my room and my important documents…i dont know what to do but definitely dont want to carry it to my new place. my mattress was brand new and i encased it in a cover but i saw some bugs on the cover…should i spray the cover and leave it out for a day or two..let me know

1NO, try calling a pest control and ask them.

2Bed bugs can be transported in any item, so the less you bring with you the better. Here are a few tips
- 30 minutes in the dryer on a high heat setting will kill bed bugs and their eggs. Washing is an additional precaution, but not absolutely necessary. 114F will kill all bed bugs and bed bug eggs.
- In terms of papers etc (and clothes, sneakers etc), I high recommend that you purchase a portable heat chamber designed to kill bed bugs (see example in resource). This is a 100% solution – although it costs around $250. This will kill bed bugs in anything without chemicals. If the plant will withstand this heat, and if it will fit in the chamber, then you can bring it with you. If not, I’d dispose of it.
- Regarding the mattress and cover, You can treat the cover with a bed bug safe spray. Good choices include Sterifab, with several others mentioned in the resource.
