My husband seems to be allergic to dust mites, because ever time he gets on the bed his asthma and allergies suddenly act up. So I'm wondering, does anyone know if wrapping the mattress in handy-wrap would protect from dust mites (as well as the toxic chemicals of the mattress)? I'm trying to find a more economical solution to expensive mattress covers. I will also do the hot wash of the bedding once a week and more frequent vacuuming see if that helps. So will handy-wrap be the same as a zip up cover?

1I would have difficulty believing that an effective seal against allergens would be formed by layering handy-wrap. Each time the bed is layed on, the compression would stretch the plastic and force air through the seams.
Instead, shampooing your mattress might be a good idea. At a minimum, gently steaming the matress will help knock down the population of mites and denature the proteins causing allergy issues. Changing your sheets weekly and keeping pets from sleeping the bed are also good ideas.
You can purchase "rubber sheets." This would provide an effective barrier between the mattress and your head. Also consider that the pillow will be loaded with the mite feces that triggers allergies. Anywhere dander could fall for their food, they will be there to help get rid of it for you.
I hope this helps.

3You might find that you are trading one allergen for another.
Many brands of plastic wrap are softened with a class of chemicals called 'phthalates'. Phthalates have been associated with asthma and allergies for years…

There's a link to more research in my profile.

4Puppylove,
You may want to try an air purifier to cut down on dust mites and air contaminants. I decided to go with an Oreck air purifier and it is doing wonders to freshen my air. I bought it at http://www.firstairpurifier.com Good luck to you!
