Ok, so I’ve dust mite allergy for about a year and it just seem to be getting worse and worse despite of taking Claritin and nasal spray. I’m getting desperate and would appreciate anyone’s advice! So here’s a couple of options that I’ve in mind:
1. Move to another place: my room is on the first floor and it doesn’t ventilate well. It’s also carpeted and old (a garage converted into a room). My vacuum broke down so I haven’t vacuum for a while.
2. Buy another bed & mattress: the bed comes with the room when I moved in, so I really didn’t know who has it before me. And it also looks old. Also it doesn’t have bed frame so it’s lying about 2 feet above the carpet on top of another mattress.
3. Just buy pillow/bedding encasement: seems to be the least costly of the three. But then I’ve been reading and it seems like it doesn’t "cure" the problem.
So, I’m leaning toward Option 1. But then it’s hard to find a cheap place in SF, CA. Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated!

1My daughter and husband both have dust mite allergys’ My daughters’ allergy is very serious.
We have no carpets, dust proof covers on her bed.
You have to get rid of carpets.!!!
A new pillow every month without fail.
If you can’t get a new mattress then cover the old one in plastic that can’t let dust mites escape.
I wet mop our bedroom floors ever day!!

3I also have an allergy to dust mites, I treat mine with an injection…..after I went through the whole allergy testing process the doctor mixed up a serum that I get shot with once a week, it works really good, I have also made changes in my living quaters as well, I did buy a new matress and had all the carpet removed in my place, so far my allergy hasnt bugged me at all.

4You could do any of those. My suggestion would be to get your bed off the floor, because that will help. You don’t have to get the special encasesments, just try to wash your sheets once a week when it’s really bad, and every two weeks when it’s a little better. Also, try to find a cheap vacuum so you can keep vacuuming. Try a thrift store or a garage sale and you should be able to find one pretty cheaply. Also, invest in an air purifier. I know they can be expensive, but they really do help to get most of the stuff out of the air so you have fewer problems. Best of luck.

5Well, as many other germs that are brewing inside that mattress and in the carpet, you need a new mattress. Mites breed in pillows and mattresses alike, so you need to replace them often (more the pillow than the mattress). You can get hypoallergenic pillows, but newer pillows are definitely important, especially because that’s where our heads lie and where we breathe our air for about 8 hours or so a day. Also, hepa-filtered vacuums are pretty cheap. You can get a good one like a dirt devil for about 60 or 70 dollars. They really help clean out the carpet. Whoever lived there before you deposited their funk, and now, without a vacuum, yours is building on top of theirs and no doubt making it worse every day. You should maybe rent a rug doctor or get someone to clean the carpet too, to get a fresh start. Good luck! I’m allergic like that too. It stinks, doesn’t it?
