   Yea, my russian eats her bark as well. I still use bark, but you can try alfelfa pellets. Harmless if eaten.

   The best bedding is a mix of bed a beast (coconut coir) and playsand (available at home supply stores like Home Depot)
   You want a higher percentage of the coir and make sure that it stays barely damp in part of the enclosure.
   As long as he's well hydrated with weekly chin deep soaks in lukewarm water there isn't a risk of impaction from the bedding. Please get him off of the pellets. They are really dehydrating and too high in protien for tortoises to eat.
   Also provide a cuttlebone (made for birds) so that your tort has some thing to chew on and a calcium source. =)
