1Try CareFresh bedding. All carefresh products are 100% natural and possess an unmatched ability to prevent and neutralize odors. They absorb more moisture than traditional animal litters, up to 3 times their weight in liquid keeping pets and living quarters drier and cleaner. Carefresh bedding does not pack down, does not track, does not fall apart when wet and can be vacuumed making clean up quick and easy. Carefresh is biodegradable and can be composted, incinerated, or flushed for easy disposal.
Many other animal beddings such as pine and cedar shavings contain aromatic oils which have been linked to liver disease in small pets. Carefresh bedding contain no aromatic hydrocarbons and are non-toxic if eaten. Lasting twice as long as other bedding materials, Carefresh is sanitized to kill bacteria, mold and fungus and has been tested for dioxin, pesticides and heavy metals to protect pets and pet owners.

2Yea, my russian eats her bark as well. I still use bark, but you can try alfelfa pellets. Harmless if eaten.

3The best bedding is a mix of bed a beast (coconut coir) and playsand (available at home supply stores like Home Depot)
You want a higher percentage of the coir and make sure that it stays barely damp in part of the enclosure.
As long as he's well hydrated with weekly chin deep soaks in lukewarm water there isn't a risk of impaction from the bedding. Please get him off of the pellets. They are really dehydrating and too high in protien for tortoises to eat.
Also provide a cuttlebone (made for birds) so that your tort has some thing to chew on and a calcium source. =)
This website is great BTW>>>
