   Are you confusing dust mites with bed bugs? Dust mites are microscopic and depend on dead skin found in the bedding, near by carpeting, stuffed animals, etc., for their livelihood. They were not discovered until the microscope was invented back in the 1700’s. We breathe their carcasses, feces, and the live dust mites as well. Many people are allergic to this bombardment of contaminated air surrounding the person on a daily basis. They can be controlled by weekly washing of the bedding in hot water and detergent. By using synthetic material for blankets, and perhaps by vacuuming with a HEPA style vacuum cleaner. Bed bugs, on the other hand, enter a home attached to used bedding or furniture, come out at night and locate a sleeping victim, and suck blood until bloated. They then hide in the bedding, under the mattress edge, behind lamps and pictures, etc. They must be exterminated if there is an infestation in a home. Bed bugs are not microscopic and can be seen with the naked eye. They are persistent little buggers and are becoming resistant to the various products available that are used to control them. The zipper style cover would work best to keep them out of the mattress, however they will have numerous other places to hide during the day.

   There are dust mite covers made for that reason that work very well. Here’s a web site that has info about allergy bedding and stuff. Hope that helps.
