I heard someone say that 99.9 percent of all households have bed bugs...in other words, everyone has them, and even though her room has been sterilized, that doesn't mean they aren't throughout the house, as well as her brother's room. And, if it is a new mattress, it is highly likely you bought the bedbugs along with the mattress. And no, the cold weather isn't going to do much, or my unheated cabin would have been free of them!

Get some Diatomaceous Earth (available at most home centers) and sprinkle it around the room, your house, and in the mattress. DE is non-toxic, safe to pets and humans, and without going into how it works here (do a Google search), will be incredibly effective in keeping your bed bug population down, if not totally eradicating it -- and quite frankly, in my opinion -- with superior results than any toxic chemical that an exterminator might use. (Great for fleas, too). For what you get and what it does, it is not expensive (my last bag cost about $18 and it goes a long way).

If you do decide to get a new mattress, get a foam one, as bedbugs will not be attracted to it, nor will they be able to thrive in it.

Better Living through Organics is my motto, and I have not had a bedbug (or flea) problem in more than five years.

ADDED: As a note about pesticides and chemicals, they will not destroy eggs, and when these eggs hatch, they will have a natural resistance to the chemical, and, in a few, very quick generations, you will have super bugs that will be impossible to get rid of with pesticides.

Well Hun unfortunately we all have them whether people like to admit it or not, this is what i do as a rule, i hoover my mattress once a week with a Dyson hoover, they are amazing, you wouldn't believe what comes out of it, i also have a mattress cover which is hypoallergenic, i wash that once a week, that will keep them at bay, as for the room go in there and use a strong disinfectant and clean every nook and cranny just like a spring clean, then hoover everything thourly, they live on dead skin cells and also feed off human blood, if you do all these things hopefully you will be OK, good luck Hun and its nothing to be ashamed of.

I called a friend of mine who does pest control;he suggested Raid ant and roach spray.Lightly spray the entire mattress and box springs(top, bottom, all 4 sides) as well as the bed frame and an area approximately 4' wide around the perimeter.
Allow everything to "air" for 3 days and then they should be gone and bed will be safe for sleeping.

I Cheap treatment. get a garden sprayer and at you local wal-mart for about 10$ you can get Ortho bug treatment. mix as directed and spray the mattress box spring and every inch of the room. close it up for a couple days then go in and vacuum. you may have to repeat the treatment a couple times as new hatch. but if you can put the bed out in a shed or some thing and soak it down you may be able to save that too. and some $. don't be ashamed every body got bugs.I Don't care who they THINK they are. It weather or not you address it or ignore it that makes the difference
