my brother and his girlfriend recently moved out of a really nasty apartment that was infested with mold and apparently bed bugs and the occasional roach. the health inspector actually forced them to move out saying that the conditions were not acceptable and that the place would have to be gutted, all the walls would have to be removed and so on. when i use to go over i was aware of the mold and the roaches, but didn’t think there was anything in the children’s room. and my daughter and i spent the night a few times. well my brother is in a new place and i went and spent the night, in the morning i noticed that he had plastic covers over his box spring and mattress and that most of his and his g/f clothing were in plastic bags, when i asked about this, he told me that someone came over to spray for bed bugs. my daughter and i slept on an air mattress, i haven’t noticed any bites or anything that look like bug bites on my little girl or me. but now im wondering if there were bed bugs could they have gotten onto our clothing and spread into my place? i have never had any roaches, mold, or bed bugs before and really wouldn’t like to get them either. is there a way to detect them if by chance they did spread to my place and if so how to get rid of them or must everything be thrown away?

1Please don’t throw all your stuff away – that would be a complete overreaction. Chances are, if you haven’t been bitten yet then you probably haven’t been infested. If you are really worried, you can keep a flashlight next to the bed at night. Wake up at some time in the middle of the night and shine the flashlight on the edges of the mattress. If you see the little buggers crawling around, THEN you have a problem. If you live in a cold climate, put the mattress outside for a day or two. Freezing temperatures will kill bedbugs.
Actually, I believe laura is thinking of dust mites. Everyone has dust mites, and typically they don’t cause a lot of trouble other than allergies for some people. Bed bugs, on the other hand, do not belong in your house and they will make you miserable with the biting.

2You probably already have bed bugs. They are microscopic and live in your clothing, walls, carpet, etc.
There really isn’t a lot wrong with little bedbugs that I’m aware of. If you really want to know if you have them, lay in bed at night and lay very still. If you feel little tickles on your legs, you’ve got’em.
And you’ve probably been around them your entire life.
Additionally, roaches and bed bugs are NOT the same.
