I’ve never been allergic to anything and my acne cleared up in my early 20’s, so whats this mess? My Husband and Baby are unaffected so far…Thank God. But I keep getting bites(?) on my face mostly. One or two on back and neck, which appeared midday to evening hours. The ones on my face start out as just an itch, progress to a red raised bump and by the next day looks like a small pimple, but still itches. An exterminator came in, found no evidence of Bed Bugs but claims they are probably hiding in the walls and wants to treat. Can anyone out there help shed some light and/or perspective on this annoying mystery.
Thanks to all who answered. Meredith I felt much better after reading yours, I’m off to a allergist & vet for my cats next week. Thanks so much!

1Bed bugs usually bite in a pattern of 3. Exterminating bed bugs can be very expensive and stressful. Before doing that I would go see a doctor and have them confirm that they are bed bug bites. Your doctor will recognize the bed bug bite pattern.
Also if you have bed bugs you can usually find traces of them on your mattress. If you look in the seems you’ll find black spots from their poop. Another sign of bed bugs is blood. Put a white pillow case on tonight, and if you find blood spots on it in the morning then it’s bug bites.
Do you have any cats or dogs? If so you might have mites. Last year I was being bit so bad at night and my husband wasn’t. My doctor ruled out bed bugs and fleas but couldn’t figure out what it was. When I brought the cat to the vet he recognized that it was skin mites. He treated the cat and I didn’t get one single bite after that. Turns out that they are attracted to some people and not others, which is why my husband wasn’t being bit.
The best would be to start by going to see a doctor.
Good luck!

2If the bumps are too big to be cause by, say, a negative skin reaction to a new fabric softener, AND they itch, then there is a good chance that small bugs are to blame. I’ve heard that bed bugs are pretty crazy on the rise in the US, and if that’s what you have, you want to get rid of it ASAP. If your husband sleeps in the same bed as you, then it’s strange he doesn’t have bites, too. You could try switching sides of the bed and see if he gets bit, and if so, then it’s pretty likely that’s what they are.
Smaller bumps are probably an allergic reaction to something though. I have a cousin who developed an allergy to something that’s found in a lot of beauty products, including most makeup and soap, when she was in her late 30’s.
Good Luck!!

3Zam,
By your description I am thinking that you have chigger bites a.k.a. harvest mites. Have you been outside much lately?
The time of year is right for most places and the description of the sore seems right for them but DOES NOT seem right for bedbugs.
The exterminator is just looking for some quick money IMO.
Maybe take a look at a safe home spray product that is chemical free that you could spray around your place before you spend huge money on an exterminator.
There is actually a bedbug spray you can safely apply around your kids, pets etc that is supposed to also work on harvest mites called BedBug Terminator by Kleen-Free that you may want to order and use in case it is either one.
Good luck.
